Aimée Beaubien: Tended (2017–18) is a book Emma designed to celebrate the work of artist, Aimée Beaubien. The motivation behind the final form and composition is to activate specific aspects inherent in the work. The book design focuses on Beaubien’s transformation of imagery through growth, decay, and reuse. In the beginning the reader is introduced to different elements of the work — vintage photographs, source photography, process work, final installations — and then presented with an opportunity to interact with these elements in a manner parallel to the artist’s own process. It concludes with spreads that continue to illustrate the innumerable possibilities presented by Beaubien.
The typography in the book further elaborates on the idea of transformation and is designed around the structure of the book. Taking primary inspiration from Beaubien’s opening statement “The act of replacing parts of an image to invent a new one is analogous to the way that I process information and reconstruct memories. I think I know something, but that thing and my relationship to it will always continue to transform.”
